Claude Hohl, Tehran, 2002,
color photograph, various sizes (detail), courtesy of the artist

This work is part of Claude Hohl's metropolitan and beach series, in which he re-photographs images of places that he has never traveled to. In their original context, 1970s illustrated books, the source images are charged with utopian promises and a criticism of the western capitalist system. They offered idealistic possibilities for improving economic prosperity all over the world-an ambition that turned out to be mirage-like.
